Games Industry Job Roles:
Game Designer
The job of the game designer is to decide what the game will be based on, an outline for the story of the game (if there is one), and the core mechanics. Game designers need to be able to convey their ideas for the game clearly to the rest of the team making the game and therefore must have good communication skills. The game designer must also be able to sketch and design as well as have an understanding of storytelling and narrative development techniques.
I think that I will do a good job as a game designer. This is because I believe that I have good designing skills and can clearly convey to the rest of the group my ideas for the game. Rank: 2.
Game Programmer
The job of the game programmer is to design and write the computer code for the game. The game designer needs to be fluent in programming languages. They must be highly organised and must have good listening skills to be able to understand the vision of the game designer. Game designers test their own codes and fix bugs accordingly, therefore they must have good problem-solving skills.
I think I will not be a very good game programmer. This is because my knowledge in coding is extremely limited, and I am not very good at identifying and solving problems when something does not work correctly. Rank: 4.
Game Artist
The job of the game artist is to create all of the visual assets of a video game. They create character models, scenery, textures, etc. The game artist must also create storyboards to demonstrate their visual ideas for the game. Game artists must therefore possess good storyboarding skills and and concept art abilities. They must be able to sketch out their concepts as well as be able to model the visuals using computer software.
I don't believe that I can do a very good job as a game artist. This is because even though I think that I am fairly good at sketching and storyboarding, I am not so good at 3D modelling. Although I have a fair amount of knowledge on how to use Maya, I think that I work at a considerably slow pace and therefore may slow the rest of the team down. Rank: 3.
Project Manager/Producer
The job of the producer is to oversee the overall progress of the game and make sure that it makes the deadline and the costs for it is within the budget. The producer must oversee all aspects of the game and must be willing to jump in and assist part of the team when needed. The producer must have knowledge on on coding, modelling, and story development.
I also feel as though I could do a good job as a project manager/producer. I believe that I have good leadership skills and can clearly give instructions. I am also very good at listening, this means that I can clearly understand how the game designer wants the game to turn out and give instructions to each member accordingly. The only problem I may have is aiding the game programmer with writing code as my knowledge on it is very limited. Rank: 1.
